‘감각세계 Sinneswelt’는 감각 경험을 단순히 오감의 차원이 아닌, 언어·사고·자아·사회적 감각이 교차하는 확장된 지각의 장(場)으로 이해하려는 시도에서 출발한다. 이는 감각적 세계와 정신적 세계를 이분법적으로 나누는 서구적 인식론을 넘어, 시대적 현실을 통과하며 형성되는 ‘감각-의미(sensory-meaning)’의 복합적 구조를 탐구하는 작업이다.

지난 13년간 나는 약 420여 개의 색을 직접 조색하며, 형용사라는 언어 체계가 지닌 유한한 분류 방식과 무한히 분화되는 색채 스펙트럼 사이의 근본적 간극을 경험해 왔다. 언어는 색을 규정하려 하지만, 색은 그 규정을 넘어서거나 빗겨가는 방식으로 세계를 드러낸다. 이러한 인식은 내가 구축해온 언어-색채 대응 체계의 한계를 자각하게 했고, 그 체계를 해체하고 재구성하는 새로운 회화적 실험으로 이어졌다.

나는 명도·채도를 정밀하게 통제하던 이전의 방법론을 내려놓고, 물을 매개로 한 우연성을 적극적으로 도입함으로써 색채가 본래 지닌 물리적·감각적 속성에 따라 스스로 변형될 수 있도록 했다. 캔버스 위에서 발생하는 흐름, 번짐, 충돌, 침투의 과정은 작가의 의도가 담긴 색과 예측 불가능한 물질적 사건이 만나 생성하는 하나의 장(field)이다. 이 장은 내가 명확히 이해하거나 통제할 수 없는 세계—특히 인간이 구축한 사회적 구조와 그 취약성—를 다시 사유하고 재해석하는 일종의 인식론적 실천이 된다.

결국 ‘감각세계’는 색채의 우연성과 감각의 확장된 의미가 교차하는 지점에서 세계를 새롭게 인식하려는 회화적 탐구이다. 이는 세계를 이해하기 위한 또 하나의 언어인 동시에, 언어로는 결코 포착될 수 없는 세계의 잉여와 균열을 드러내려는 시각적 사유의 실천이다.

‘Sensory World (Sinneswelt)’ originates from an attempt to understand sensory experience not merely as a dimension of the five senses, but as an expanded field of perception where language, thought, self, and social senses intersect. This work explores the complex structure of ‘sensory-meaning’ formed through the passage of historical reality, transcending the Western epistemology that dichotomously separates the sensory world from the mental world.

Over the past 13 years, I have directly mixed approximately 420 colors, experiencing the fundamental gap between the finite classificatory system of language as adjectives and the infinitely differentiating spectrum of color. Language attempts to define color, yet color reveals the world by exceeding or deflecting those definitions. This recognition led me to perceive the limitations of the language-color correspondence system I had constructed, and subsequently evolved into a new pictorial experiment that deconstructs and reconstructs that system.

I let go of my previous methodology of precisely controlling value and saturation, and actively introduced contingency mediated by water, allowing color to transform itself according to its inherent physical and sensory properties. The processes of flow, bleeding, collision, and permeation occurring on the canvas constitute a field generated by the encounter between colors imbued with the artist’s intention and unpredictable material events. This field becomes a kind of epistemological practice through which I re-think and reinterpret the world I cannot clearly understand or control, particularly the social structures constructed by humans and their fragility.

Ultimately, ‘Sensory World’ is a pictorial inquiry that seeks to newly perceive the world at the point where the contingency of color intersects with the expanded meaning of sensation. It is simultaneously another language for understanding the world and a practice of visual thinking that attempts to reveal the surplus and fissures of the world that can never be captured by language.
